Carols 2nd 1/2 marathon: in her own words.
My intention was only ever to take part in 1 half marathon. That was to prove that I could actually do it. Not running all the way, but having the determination, motivation & stamina to cover 13.1 miles/21.1km. On October 7 2018, I did so in just a few seconds under 3 hours (yes, I'm slow!) while wearing 1 x ankle support, 2 x knee supports & a pair of gel insoles. I did train & plan & prepare fo that event.
I've yet to work out why I signed up for the 2nd annual event at Balik Pulau earlier this year. Maybe because I'd forgotten the tendon/knee/hip pain? Maybe because I'd forgotten about the early hours spent pounding pavements? Maybe because I find the Activestyle organisation so good? & then there are the T shirts, & the medal.....
Training started soon after my Spartan Super OCR event, & due to travel & visitors, I had my long run of 18.5km on 4 October.
On the day, I was prepared, carrying sports rehydration salts in my hydration vest (a wonderful & well used investment), & a selection of Gu gels to refuel during the run - including chocolate! Flag off was on time at 6am, & set off at a comfortable pace, although a bit too fast for the distance. Whatever, the weather was good, if a bit warm & I was only exposed to the sun for the final 3km, but I finished in 2h50m45s - taking 9 minutes off my previous PR. I did not wear/use any supports anywhere, & stretched later throughout the day to avoid any problems. I was placed 69th female veteran (that's 35 years old & above), 87th female to finish, taking an overall place of 376 for the event.
